Irritation is the greatest form of flattery is concerned with a particular political quandary, namely the radical improbability of a balance being struck between the will of individuals and the interests of the collective. The text of this work — ‘Democracy is a good idea’ — is an asteistic statement, a back-handed compliment: the work acknowledges at once the virtue of the notion of democracy and the improbability of its realisation without compromise.
