Without Time
Anna Pappas Gallery

Without Time grew out of my ongoing interest in the intersection of artistic avant gardes and luxury capitalism, and specifically the reduction of avant garde practices, both contemporary and historical, to interior decoration. The exhibition’s title is derived, with irony, from a literal mistranslation of the Italian ‘sense tempo’, properly translated as ‘timeless’, the name of the 2010 collection by Italian furniture maker Minotti. The title is also intended to evoke the notion of ‘the end of history’ found in the writings of Francis Fukuyama and Jean Baudrillard, but there is a dose of romanticism here also, and so the flavour is more like ‘the end of the end of history’. In this exhibition, just as in today’s designerly home, divergent motifs and materials came together in pursuit of a seamless whole.
